Model United Nations

The United Nations aims to inform leaders of how the United Nations operates, particularly in debating and resolving issues on various topics, and they call it a model United Nations (www.un.org/en/mun). It is a program of the United Nations in which many schools around the world participate.

On July 21 and 22, workshops were held at Waterford Kamhlaba School in Eswatini. Twelve schools from southern Africa participated. Maputo International College sent 15 student leaders, many of them members of the debating club moderated by teachers Caleb Chimuti and Terry Rugoyi. The students were taught about plenary sessions, debate formats, and making resolutions. They were also tasked with representing countries like South Korea, Iraq, and others to simulate how these countries will present their stand on the issues that face them. Interestingly, some of the issues tackled were child abuse and economic development.

At the end of the workshop, certificates and awards were given. The awardees from MIC were as follows:

  6. Hany Jayantilal, honorable mention in the World Food Program
  7. Ndzua Tembe Alima, Most Passionate Delegate of the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development
  1. Quizana Ayanda Guivala, Best Delegate of the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization Committee
  1. Thulane Sitoe, Best Speaker of the World Health Organization
  1. Kauê Manessa, honorable mention
  1. The most passionate delegate, Nozihle Muchemedzi, on the topic of "Establishing Preparedness Protocols for Epidemics and Pandemics
